What ED injection therapy is
ED injection therapy, known medically as intracavernosal injection, delivers a small dose of prescribed medicine into the side of the penis with a very fine needle. The medicine relaxes the blood vessels and lets blood flow in, producing an erection that doesn't depend on digestion the way a pill does. Because it works locally, it is an option for many men who haven't done well with tablets.
Injections are one part of the ED treatment we offer at Aspire, alongside ED medication and Soundwave Therapy. Your physician will explain how they compare for you, and some men use more than one.
The idea of an injection puts plenty of men off at first. In practice, most find it quicker and easier than they expected once they have been shown how, which is why we spend real time teaching it in the clinic.
Is injection therapy right for you?
Injection therapy is often considered for:
- Men for whom ED pills don't work well enough
- Men who can't take ED pills or get side effects from them
- Men with ED after prostate surgery or pelvic surgery
- Men with diabetes-related ED
- Men who want an option that doesn't depend on timing around meals
It may not suit men who take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, have a curve or scarring in the penis, or would find handling a needle difficult. Your physician will go through all of this with you.
How we teach you to self-inject

Your prescription explained
Your physician explains the medicine, your prescribed dose, how quickly it works and what to watch for, and answers your questions before you start.

Hands-on training
We show you how to draw your prescribed dose from the vial, check for air bubbles, find the right spot on the side of the penis and give the injection. Many patients use a small spring-loaded applicator, so you don't have to push the needle in by hand.
- 03
Practice until you're comfortable
You practise the steps in the clinic with our team beside you. Take as much time as you need, and we can go over it again at a follow-up visit.

Videos and support at home
After your visit you get short step-by-step how-to videos to watch whenever you need a refresher, and you can call the clinic with questions.
Always use the dose on your prescription label, rotate between the left and right side, and put used needles in a sharps container. Never use more than prescribed or more often than your physician has told you.
Safety: what to watch for
Minor bruising, a small spot of bleeding or a mild ache at the injection site are the most common side effects and usually settle quickly.
An erection lasting more than four hours is a medical emergency. Call us at (504) 717-7775 or go to the nearest emergency room. Don't wait for it to go away on its own.
With long-term use, scar tissue can form inside the penis. Tell us about any new lump, curve or pain, and keep your follow-up visits so we can check.
Tell your physician about every medicine you take, especially blood thinners, and let us know if your health changes. Follow-up visits are also where we adjust your dose if the effect is too weak or lasts longer than it should, so it is worth keeping them even when things are going well.
P-Shot (PRP)
We also offer the P-Shot. It uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP): a small sample of your own blood is drawn and spun to concentrate the platelets, then the plasma is injected into the penis. It is given in the clinic by our team, which makes it different from the injection therapy above, which you use at home. Your physician will explain how the procedure works, including how we keep you comfortable.
To be straight with you: PRP for ED is newer and less studied than medication or injection therapy, and the American Urological Association guideline considers it investigational. Some men choose to try it, often alongside other treatment. Your physician will explain what is and isn't known so you can decide.
